There are a lot of businesses out there. I dont know even a fraction of them. I could look through the yellow pages memorize the whole thing and still not know even half of the different companies that actually exist in even the small area that I live.
In that massive collection of businesses it can be very easy to be lost and forgotten. I can only remember so many places before my mind is too full to process it all. It also means that your competition isnt always going to be someone directly in your market.
Every business that is advertising is vying for a persons attention and if you arent advertising enough yourself that attention wont be focused on you.
The small business owner is going to need to be even more acutely aware of this issue. The money isnt always there for massive color printing orders. They cant be sure to always have an advertisement up to ensure no one lets their company name slip from the mind.
And if you arent aware of the possibilities youll soon notice your sales slipping and your name fading from the public until your company fades away as well.
But there is a solution to the problem.
Get your name out there and keep it out there. Thats what you need to do but the real question becomes how do you do it on a very small budget.
Business cards will probably be your best friend for a while. As one of the cheapest kinds of color printing orders you can get youll never want to be without a lot of business cards on hand. They can be used in a variety of ways and partially make up for your lack of money for other advertising.
Walk door to door and slip your business cards into a mailbox or under a door. Now you have a cheaper form of direct mailing with postcards. Tack up your business cards on a bulletin board in a place you know your customers frequent. Now you have a cheaper form of posters.
Flyers can be used in a similar fashion. Like business cards theyre cheap to print and can be used in a variety of different ways but unlike business cards theyre a little bigger and flashier helping to ensure more people will take notice of them.
Dont forget the importance of word of mouth either. If you get people talking about you theyll be inclined to talk to their friends as well. The more people who mention you the more marketing youre getting done for free.
And never miss an opportunity to mention your business when striking up a conversation with someone. Each time you say your company name youre ensuring it wont be forgotten in the throngs of other companies.
The reason many companies are forgotten is because they dont understand how important marketing really is. So long as youre sure to always have some form of marketing being used you wont have to worry about your company fading into the past.
