Video Marketing Tips – Did Victor Kiam Get It Right?
To say that Victor Kiam is a legendary name in the world of marketing is an understatement but as the video grows over the internet did he get it right when it comes to video marketing?
Victor Kiam became famous as the man who ‘liked the shaver so much he bought the company’. Not only did the slogan become famous he did too by appearing in his own adverts. He was advised against it by advertising ‘consultants’ but he was an old school entrepreneur and went by the theory that if it was actually him in the adverts people would believe he was genuine.
The theory seemed to work and the campaign was huge success. Kiam passed away in 2001 but fast forward to 2009 and the video is now the media of choice to communicate online and to sell. Youtube is the 2nd most visited site on the internet with many people choosing to use that site in preference to say Google.
This provides a huge opportunity for those who can ride the wave but it does beg the question of whether Kiam’s theory still holds up? Of course the answer is not clear cut. If you look presentable and have the right speaking skills then my view would be that yes you should appear in your videos.
However if you don’t have the look or skills then you would probably be better not to appear. You can maybe use your voice but it’s perfectly possible to not appear in your videos at all. Remember the end result you want is to sell and your appearance in your videos is not the priority the sale is!
So to sum up although Victor Kiam hit paydirt when he decided to appear in his own adverts in today’s world of internet video it’s not always the best idea and today’s world of technology allows us to trial and error.
